Some laws, like yielding to pedestrians, make perfect sense. However, other laws in effect in the United States are a touch on the strange side, and for some reason they’ve managed to stick around in the law books.
Florida is no exception. Here are 5 strange laws from right here in the Sunshine State:
1. Unmarried couples cannot live together.
This law was originally passed in 1868 and essentially prohibited any couples who were not married from living together. Couples ignoring this law could have faced up to 60 days in jail or a hefty fine.
To many people’s delight, this law was repealed earlier this year and cohabitating couples can now live together legally.
2. Simulated bullfights are a no go.
According to Florida Statute 828.121, simulated, “bloodless” bullfighting exhibitions can be punished with a misdemeanor charge.
3. Fireworks have no limits when it comes to fish hatcheries.
Florida law has many restrictions when it comes to buying and selling fireworks for various uses. However, according to Statute 791.07, there are no limits when it comes to purchasing fireworks with the intention of scaring birds away from fish hatcheries.
4. Releasing 10 or more balloons is illegal.
Florida Statute 379.233 prohibits individuals from releasing more than 10 balloons within a 24 hour period. Why? It’s to protect wildlife from injury by consuming those balloons once they deflate. This statute doesn’t apply if the balloons are biodegradable or if they are released indoors.
5. Pigs are protected during pregnancy.
It’s illegal to confine or tie up pigs if they are pregnant in the state of Florida. It’s uncertain as to why only pigs are mentioned in this statute and other animals like cows or horses are omitted.
