In 2018 so far, Florida Governor Rick Scott has signed over 100 new bills into law, and some of those new policies went into effect on July 1, 2018.
Here’s what you need to know about some of Florida’s new laws:
Painkiller Prescriptions
Most painkiller prescriptions will be limited to a three-day supply in order to respond to the severity of the opioid crisis, especially within the state of Florida.
Marriage License Requirements
Florida law now states that marriage licenses cannot be issued to anyone under the age of 18. There are certain circumstances, like parental consent, that may allow licenses to be issued to younger individuals.
Private Beaches
This new law allows private businesses or homeowners to choose whether or not to restrict access to the beach on their property from the high tide water mark up.
School Safety
Known as the “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act,” sworn officers are now to be placed at each school. In addition, active shooter training will be required every semester, and school boards must establish threat assessment teams.
Blocking Calls
This bill is referred to as the “Florida Call-Blocking Act,” and it allows telecommunication providers to block certain calls, rely on caller ID to process information, and determine originating numbers with the purpose of blocking those calls.
Invasive Species
Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission must now establish a pilot program with procedures in place for both the capture and release of various invasive species. Priority species in this initiative have been established as tegu lizards and lionfish.
