Summer is finally here, and that means thousands of people are headed out to Florida’s miles of coastline. Clearwater has proved to be a very popular tourist destination, hosting more than 4 million visitors annually.
However, an issue that Clearwater has been facing recently is the amount of beach traffic and traffic accidents that tend to plague the roadways in the area. Because the beaches are so popular, more traffic is on the roads than they are equipped to handle, and both hotel construction and regular road maintenance aren’t helping the situation. These issues cause delays to become longer and longer for visitors as the beach season goes on.
Luckily, city officials are aware of the issue and have been discussing ideas for improvement as well as the means needed to solve the beach traffic problem this summer and in the long term.
City Manager Bill Horne and Mayor George Cretekos, after a meeting in which beach traffic problems were discussed, believe that short term events such as the summer beach season should be taken into account first. This means that short-term solutions will be a first priority. After those issues are addressed, long-term goals for the traffic patterns can begin to take shape.
As with all city projects, codes and laws must be upheld with construction, so solutions may not come as quickly as some would like; however, the gears are in motion for improvements to be implemented.
